sleeping with a bivy bag as a windstopper

    Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience sleeping with a bivy bag (goretex, hyvent, etc) around his sleeping bag/quilt in the hammock to provide protection from the wind.

It's not for protection against the rain in this case.

I'm going on a tarpless expedition but I want some protection from the wind and a bivy might help.

I'm looking for your opinions and experiences to give me some insight in the pros and cons.

Is your bivy bag big enough to go around the hammock? It could act as a "sock" and provide full protection. Try to see if it will fit around the hammock. Since your using a pad, I think it would. Rig up a ridgeline to keep it off your face, if you'd like.
Condensation inside may be the only issue.

    Hey gargoyle,

I wouldn't and can't hang it around the hammock, the zipper starts above my waist. I would use it like I would use a sleeping bag

On a trip to SFA State Park about 2 years ago, I used a ranger sleeping bag inside a bivy bag with great success. It was cold, wet, and miserable that weekend. I stayed warm and dry with plenty of protection from the wind.

When I first started hanging I always used my bivvy bag as part of my setup. I had an old HH Expedition at the time and it was always good fun come bed time, The combination of the bottom entry and wriggling around for ten minutes always got me into a fit of giggles.
As hammocking was fairly new over here at the time I think I carried the bivvy as part of a "go to ground" backup in case my suspension gave in or the tarp blew away
It did block a cold wind and probably added a few degrees in warmth but it wasn't enough to stop me carrying it after a while.
