Closed cell foam (CCF) is almost impossible to compress, so it does not lose insulation effectiveness when you lie on it or sit on it. It is also waterproof, as water cannot penetrate the plastic surface. Open Cell Foam (OCF) is like a sponge, when you lie or sit on it, it compresses so loses it's insulation qualities. It can only effectively be used between the layers of a double layer hammock, or in an undercover of some kind such as the Hennessey insulation/weatherproofing system. an OCF will also suck up lots of water (it is a sponge after all) and they are usually rather delicate, so you have to be careful how you pull them around or they rip and/or split.

Some say that they find a CCF in the hammock uncomfortable. I have to say that I don't even notice it's there. It costs $6 vs 200 plus for a down underquilt, It's waterproof, just about indestructible, and half the weight of a down underquilt or inflatable pad. You can also use it on the floor if the worst comes to the worst, which you could not do with OCF or down.
WHen park rangers go out, most take a CCF pad a) because it is warm and b) because it is completely reliable. Sounds like good practice to me.
I just wish it got smaller. That ccf is a pain if you're working with a space limit sometimes. I agree, though, that it is extremely reliable and probably hands down the best warmth to $ ratio you could hope for.
I have worked with foamorder.com for products ordered at work and they are reasonably priced although I don't know how effective this specific item is.
For a Hammock Pad, I ordered microcell from
