    Gossamer Gear Pad

Just saw today that Gossamer Gear has a new pad. It is a wide and long pad (28"x76x1/4) It weighs between 6.9 oz and 7.3oz.
I have the 1/8 pad they sell and it works well. The 1/8 is incredibly flexible and light and they say the 1/4 is just a little stiffer.
This 1/4 could really be a great pad. You could use 1 or two in the hammock or 1 or 2 between the Nest and hammock and or Weather shield.

Sounds like great news for pad users...finally one big enough for use in a hammock. I wonder if that's enough to sleep fetal and still keep the knees and butt insulated. Guess it would depend on how big the butt is and what kind of hammock.

I managed to pick up a 3/4 length 1/8" inch thick pad. This stuff is worlds beyond the Walmart pad in terms of packablity and compressibility. I haven't had a chance to test it for how well it insulates. I plan on using it as a sit pad and a insulation for my shoulder area in a HH.

At $15.00 this is gonna make a great hammock pad, especially with those dimenions. I may have to order one and try it out.

I just sent back two pads I recently bought from Gossamer.. They were 29"x59"x3/4 Pretty light at 13oz.each. Those puppies cost me $85 including shipping.
I thought I could use them in the same fashion as mentioned above. Would really go down to extreme low temps. Those things were beasts. Very bulky and hard to manage.

i`ve got both the 1/8" & the 3/8" in the more narrow versons (19"?).
i haven`t used them a lot as of yet, but i belive they will have good insulative value for the weight.
but they aren`t as tough as the other ccf pads. the 1/8" will tear with ease. and i belive the 3/8 will tear more easyly than most ccf pads.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

I remember reading that on WB somewhere. Do you think based on the pads you have the 1/4" pad would hold up. I need to find a pad that I can cut to a little longer than torso length for my thru next spring. I am also window shopping the gearskin pack, so it would need to hold up for packing.

Man I need to get my gear sorted out.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

i would want to get the opinions of some others that have put them to real use. but i`d be weary of using that pad for something like a thru hike.
if you could get one & spend some time w/ it... sleeping on it in the hammock, getting in & out of the hammock w/ that pad, & so forth.
i`ll bet if you go to backpackgeartest they may have tested & reported on it.
i was looking at HOI`s gear skin last weekend & the pad may be partly exposed as you hike the trail... acording to how you load the GS.
that would make me even more weary of a pad that`s more easyly torn.
but if you were using a double hammock, w/ the pad inbetween... that would be much better.

I'm making a gearskin knockoff, but I don't plan on packing it in the 'standard taco' formation at all. I don't like that much of my gear exposed, especially not the body of my hammock. Seems like a big risk to take. Not to mention that putting a 20 + " wide pad in there as a taco defeats the nice slim design of the gearskin. I'll be using 'normal' packing techniques I guess - pad rolled on the outside, hammock and quilts stuffed. Just seems safer.

I'd put $ down that you are still fidding w/your gear the day before you leave for Springer! It's in your nature to tinker.
