I use a set of Soft Shackles as a Biner replacement, have used them for two years now without issue! My set up goes: 4 ft. strap around tree- Shackle - whoopie
My whoopie stays attached to my hammock via larks head! I used to use Dutch Clips but when I was experimenting with the UL set-up that was one of the things that got cut from the line-up and just passed the strap through the loop!
I carry two suspension extensions as a just in case I have a tree that my 4ft strap won't fit around, works every time!
So far I haven't experienced what Hawk did, never saying it couldn't happen (as others have said the same as him) but I carry a extra shoe lace (cotton one, not waxed) as a just in case it's needed!

Only time it ever happened to me ... It might have been a few factors like the angle of the whoopie, wind and volume of rain, and the direction of the rain. There also seem to be an excessive amount of water sheeting off of the tree on that side. It did not go past the Dutch Biner on the other side. Only on the one side.

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

True! The extenuating factors might have been there, but, others have reported the same as you over the years and I think that is why it keeps on popping up on here! So far I guess I have been lucky, and unfortunately it's just a matter of time before my luck runs out!
    Hopefully no time soon!?!?!?

i used nacrabiners closed with the sliding whipping all last year.i have never used dutch clips.
the nacras work good to attach the strap to the tree, but i did have some problems.
getting pine sap on them made them hard to use.

slideing the whipping off the end of the nacra and loosing my stopper.i figured out how to tie them so this would not happen after i had a in the field problem.

after a day of rain ,then dropping temps i had one freeze shut.ended up cutting it off.could have worked it free after awhile most likely.

they are easy to forget to close when you pack up and they fall off your strap.lost a few this way.ended up stiching them in to the strap as others do with dutch clips.

after writing that out i can not figure why i am still useing them.slow, stubborn diy learner.a dutch clip would have eliminated these problems.

Dutch clips and Dutch biners. i use soft shackles and nacrabiners for other things, as well as, back-up should i lose something. for quick, solid, safe and reliable set-up, Dutch's rule!
