DIY No Zipper Attached Bugnet

I agree, but I dont understand why the tube has two shock cords.

I picture one shock cord on the right side for ingress/egress, the bug net continues under the hammock, comes up the left side and is draped over the ridgeline and/or the right side shock cord.
The "flap over" is held in place by weighted pockets and or Shoreborn's idea of tucking it into an elastic strap near the right side shock cord.
The head and foot end would need to be semi-permanently cinched tight with a cord lock just like a traditional tube.

1. Exit from the right and the bug net stays in place.
2. Exit easily from the left, but the bug net fall to the ground on one side.
3. Can reach out from the right for items under the hammock without messing with zipper etc.
4. The weighted pockets and/or elastic strap may reduce the sag under the hammock found in traditional tubes (which is just aesthetically unsightly)
5. If the weighted pockets / elastic strap do hold the bug net snug even when you are rolling around, then the portion of the bug net under the hammock could be made of some material to provide a summer weight UQ. (I think rolling around in the hammock will make it sag though)

If I have missed this somewhere in this thread, I appologize. But has anyone tried this with a Blackbird type hammock with a footbox? I am getting ready to start on a DIY hammock, and this seems like the perfect bug net. But I was wanting to incorporate a footbox also (probably not the shelf though). I wasn't sure how the shortened side with the footbox would affect the bug net. Any thoughts and/or ideas on this approach?

It would be easier to shape the bugnet with a footbox. Brandon figured that out a long time ago

There is too much fiddle factor for me in having one side held in place by weights or tucking.

I made my daughters hammock with shock cord on both sides and she LOVES it. She can easily get in and out of her hammock, even when 1/2 asleep.
It is so simple... pull down which ever side you are on, get in, let go of the side so it returns to the "up" position. Nothing to adjust or tuck.
I just can't see my 7 year old negotiating the process required to secure the flap or tuck.

For me, I'm sure I could handle the weighted or tucked flap, I just don't want to when it looks like there might be a way to solve the problem without needing the flap.

RJCress it was a nomenclature problem.
When you said tube I thought you meant something like this:

I like it bc it is simple and easy to remove.
Downside is it only has ingress egress on one side.

What is the tube in your drawing near the ridgeline made of?
It seals just by the shock cord holding each side tight against the tube?

Tube is made of bug netting.
I have some fairly stiff bug netting that I think will work well for this.
Haven't tested it yet, so it it may not work, but the theory is that there will be a very tiny gap that it has to fill, so it should be fine.
I've seen on my daughter's hammock that the gap is tiny... so that part isn't theory... just that the tube will have enough structure to fill the void and seal out the critters.

Not to much deviation there. I do think you tube is elegant though.

Are you going to sew the left and the right bug net to the hammock edge?

I like Hangnout's original design, but I am looking for a fellow champion of the one piece wrap around bug net which is not permanently attached.

I did a quick mock up with Tyvek and was surprised how much fabric my idea takes. I was told (and agreed) that I would not need much fabric underneath my 60" wide hammock bc the hammock would bunch up. It does. But, when you lay diagonal it stretches to its full 60".

I did the original design cover first and really don't like it.
It is an innovative solution, and I can't put my finger on why I don't like it, but I don't. I think it is probably just the aesthetics.

Aesthetically, I expect the tube to be markedly different than the "roof".

Cool seeing the original concept veer off in different directions as it develops.

It just dawned on me...
My nephew was stationed in the Philippines and Taiwan last year and brought back a hammock and bugsock for me.
The bugsock is made exactly like hangnouts design, but it is removable. Fully encloses the bottom of the hammock, elastic ridgelines, and a flap to seal.

I'll see if I can find it..hopefully I didnt sacrifice to some other project.

It was made for a really small (Taiwanese sized army guy) hammock and it did not work for me at all.
