    How big is your toggle?

I'm new to HF and also to whoopie suspension and was wondering whether there's an ideal diameter for toggles used in the marlin spike hitch?

What got me to thinking was that I cut, peeled and sanded a couple of trail sticks from a hawthorn, about 4" long but only approx 3/8" thick. They are extremely light and strong but does the diameter affect the hitch???

    Regards, Matt.

The amsteel sits on the knot of the MSH so the diametre can vary. I don't know if there is a minimum but I remember seeing someone set up a MSH with a pen once.

You can use anything as long as it doesnt break, a tent stake, small flashlight, arrowshafts, golf shafts all work.
    I don't see why hawthorn wouldn't work.
The weight is on the hitch/knot. And the toggle is just to hold the hitch from falling thru on itself. So be sure to place the whoopie onto the hitch and not the toggle itself.

I use 3.5" pieces of aluminum arrow shaft. It works for me.

Arrow shaft toggles from Smokebait @ whoopieslings.com or a couple of MSR groundhog tent stakes.

My light hiker is hanging from the tent stakes right now. Hoping to get a little storm action overnight. I haven't slept in a hammock in a storm yet. Can't wait to see how it goes.

I usually just pick up a couple of finger-thick sticks off the ground.

Heh, I read the thread title and thought, "That's what she said!"

I use 3/8" aluminum round stock. Maybe 3" long.

3/8" carbon fiber arrow shafts cut 4" long. I can't break them by jumping on them so I feel very secure.

3 inch cut plastic coat hangers.

Any material that can resist the crushing force of the knot is fine.
