    Won't you be Mayan?

Does anyone know anything about this backpacking hammock and/or vendor? http://www.hangouts.com/Camping.html#backpackerdream Does anyone sleep this way (I mean while camping or backpacking?) I'm only 5'5" so my backpacking DIY (the Peace Pipe) is only slightly smaller side to side than I am tall. Since falling in love with my footline this winter (who wants to take off your boots in the winter?), it occurred to me that I could easily curl up into my hammock sideways. No shoulder squeeze, the underquilt would be less problematic (although a bug net would be more so). But I don't see any threads about this on the forums. Does anyone "go Mayan" while camping?

    Mayan

I bought 3 king size hammocks from them. Very reasonable, great service and nicely made. These are back yard only. My son has one hanging from top ends of his bunk bed and hangs there while reading or more likely texting.

Yup. I'm working on something like this. So is Dutch. I hope to have an improved model at the Hot Springs Hang in May, so maybe you can check it out. I notice that the pictured "Backpacker's Dream" is hung with a lot of sag, but I think that's not necessary. There is virtually no shoulder-squeeze if you hang with less sag. In fact, I have some hopes of developing this design into a two-person hammock in which the occupants are not smashed together in the middle. Might be dreaming on that one, but that's what we do in hammocks.

By the way, how about that mosquito net set-up? They're really pushing the envelope there.

Thanks, David. You and Dutch keep us posted on your progress. I'll be very interested in seeing pictures. Yeah, that mosquito net is a piece of work, that's for sure! Pleasant dreams!

I have used a Mayan style hammock for camping before, and it is not the best. The rope at the ends of the fabric tend to get twisted, and then the different lengths of cord usually make a narrow area with good tension, and the sides simply drop off.

Laying sideways in a hammock seems nice (mine isn't wide enough), but don't go with that design for backpacking unless you go snake skins with the hammock.
