I was brushing up on some LNT practices and I stumbled onto this blog from two years ago:

    http://leavenotracecommunity.blogspo...k-camping.html

While the blog does not advocate hammock camping over tent camping, it certainly laid out some solid impact reasons for hanging over tenting.

There was a shout out to the hammock forums and to Ed Speer's book on Hammock Camping. Anytime someone gives hammocking a positive review, I'm a happy hammocker!

2"-4" tree savers? Are any of us carrying something so wide?

Thanks for sharing. Another positive for the hammock crowd.

The huggers for the Hennessy Expedition are 3-inch wide seat belt webbing. That was the standard I used until I starting using an ENO and then my Warbonnet.

A couple of years ago I was searching the internet for camping hammocks. I found a link to a company that was making/selling hammocks. On the web site they had a video of how to hang their hammock.

If I recall correctly the hammocks had straps, not ropes, that appeared to be the usual 1 inch wide straps. But the other item they showed in the video was a piece of cloth, maybe 8" x 10" or maybe they were smaller perhaps more like 6" x 8". He did not mention its dimensions.

They showed the cloth being wrapped around the back side of the tree before the straps were placed around the tree. The protective cloth appeared to be a standard part of the equipment that came with the hammock suspension system. At least I don't recall the guy in the demo saying anything about the cloth being something for the user to make himself or that it was used only on the particular species of tree he was hanging the hammock on in the video.

Unfortunately I do not recall the name of the hammock company and searching around today I was not able to find it again. So it appears that at one time at least one company was promoting a wide protective layer. But that is the only place I have ever seen that method of rigging the hammock suspension lines.

We all know we don't need to do this. While I generally agree with the concept behind the LNT movement, some of their suggestions I find a bit extreme and perplexing.

Maybe their concern is with the average homo sapien who buys a low end hammock and doesn't understand the proper way to hang em?

I'm leaning towards finding some seatbelts (about 2 1/2") from a newer totaled car and putting them to a new use, which they say is even better than recycling.

But then I don't care about weight since the kayak carries my gear.
