    Hammock Stand Version 1.0

I have taken a look at several hammock stands on this site, and have borrowed heavily from many of you. I thought you would like to see my version. This is my first attempt, and I have a few changes to make, but the overall look won't change much. I would like to make it more portable because the 4x4 is 10 feet long and that's a bit too long for the bed of my pickup. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Looks nice. What did you use for the uprights? Also, any guess on weight?

No idea on weight. The uprights are 1 inch pipe I bought at home depot. My main reason for building this is because I don't have any trees in my back yard and I need a place to hang and experiment. I would like to make it portable because from time to time I'd like to take it to a state park where the trees aren't conducive to hammocking.

Looks good, and alot like one that I made. I like the ratchet straps on the back side. 1 of the problems I have with mine is that if you have a tarp on it and get in the hammock, the tarp sags. I may have to steal this idea and try it with mine.

I had the same problem, added a bungie cord to the ridgeline on both sides of the tarp. It takes up the slack when you put your full weight in the hammock.

Could you cut your 4x4 in half and re-join it for use?
The 5 foot sections should fit in your truck bed.

    Looks great
    Very elegant solution.

I thought about cutting it in half, but I'm afraid it would weaken the 4x4 too much. I would need some sort of an attachment that would really reinforce that joint.

Nice design...looks like it really needs side guys for lateral stability...?

It would be interesting to see what the direction of forces are on the 4x4 in the middle, to determine what kind of joint could be used.

I'm sure in the US, it would be easy to find frame construction hardware to reversibly join those together...

Since I like woodworking, I'd like go for a joint like this since my guess is the two halves would have a desire to "taco" under stress in that rig...

Oh, well, can't find a picture on the net...

Nice concept but agree with DD that you'll need something to provide lateral stability for the uprights.

The bending force on the bottom 4x4 is actually pretty high. On my stand the beam visibly flexes towards the ground when you get in the hammock. Hope someone figures out a way to make it separable.

Just an idea, but if you were to cut your 4x4 in half could you not join them back together by putting a sleeve over the join? maybe something like 2-3 foot of steel square tube evan secure it with a bolt at each end....?
