    Knobstone Trail

I'd like help with planning some Knobstone sections later in the season. This is one of the trails I have no trail time, and little detailed information on.

Anyone that's done any of the trail or plans to, and can spare some time to post a few tips, pointers, links, will be greatly appreciated.

With the power of the interwebz it seems I keep circling and not finding what I need at the moment. I did find that they would like to connect up with another trail that would increase the system to 140 miles in all, and that certainly sounds promising.

Knobstone is a hard hike I hear with little water. Most people that do the Knob plan their water near road crossings is my understanding. Maybe you can put a hike 'n hang the Knob event. I'd possibly be up for it, but the water would have to figured out for sure. I'll see if i can find the website with the so-so map i have on my other 'puter and let you know (after my midterms this week).

Being from central Indiana I too plan on hiking the knobstone. It will most likely be in late July. I've also read about scarce water but its not something that worries me too much. I've read an account of someone hiking it in the middle of summer and getting 6" of rain in a night and not really having to rely on water caches. I think the best place for information would be the DNR. I believe they have the maps too. There is also a 28 mile trail south of corydon called the adventure trail and it runs along the Ohio river at one point.

I have section hiked it all.
    The good:
I love the mile markers! Makes it sooo easy to know where you are all the time.
It is pretty tough. I know some AT thru hikers who have used it as a training hike. Your average weekend backpacker will suffer in places. The people who laid out the trail never heard of a switchback...so straight up you go!

    The bad:
Water is tough! I have carried 9 liters of water in the summer (sucked) because it was BONE dry (outside the lakes). Water can be non-existant in the middle for a few days. Plan it out!

Here is the DNR website. Their maps are very good (and free to print)
    http://www.in.gov/dnr/outdoor/4224.htm

I have promised myself to thru it soon...but have not yet
let me know when your going...who knows??!!

I have some Google Earth files that map out the original 50 miles worth of trail heads if you want them. I can't seem to upload them here so you will have to get me your email address if you want them. I believe that I found them on http://www.knobstonetrail.net/ . Another good source is http://hoosierhikerscouncil.org/index.shtml .

I've also considered attempting to do the KT. I haven't decided if it would be the original portion or all 140 miles of it.

    Thanks for the quick responses!

I'm already planning on resupply caches and support. My target will be early to mid-fall.

From past experience, conditions can be bone dry outside of a few watershed ponds, that time of year.

My goals are also to use this for future thru-hike training/conditioning. I'd like to eventually thru the entire 140, before making claims on a bigger commitment. Keep the tips coming and maybe some of us can kick it around face to face, at the HH in April.

I through hiked it last June....Plenty of water at that time....
We started on the north end, and hiked South....
The further south you go....the less water....

Also, there is a area around Marker 20 that is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!! Wonderful majistic pines.....some 4 ft. dia. just a great place...

    I wanted to do a section ( or 2 ) next weekend......interested??

    You tempt me!

Pinnacle hasn't shipped yet and Papa Smurf is still injecting thread for me. I'd certainly be up for a few sections before I try to hike it in the fall.

Thanks for the PM Jerry, I'll be in touch

Trout < I haven't forgotten about Deem either. I'm still shooting for an HH shakedown run. Got any preferences?
