    Tarp With Mason Line

Would mason line work for a tarp ridge line? And if it would work, how well? Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

I was going to use mason line so I strung up some over about 15 foot.. put a prussic on it and pulled... stretch was unbelievable. I quickly abandoned the idea.

I've used trot line before. Its pretty much the same thing except its tar coated. Now i just use it for tie outs and prusiks on a paracord ridgeline. It holds knots exceptionally well and cheap.

I'll use it for tie outs but not for a full length ridgeline. It's a great cheap fix but tangles if not carefully put up.

I use it for a full ridge line. Works fine. Yes, it does stretch, but I use a trucker's hitch and pull it nice and tight. Braided mason line holds something like 150lbs, which is plenty. I've had no problems with it sagging overnight, etc.

I have used mason line for my cont. ridge line many times with no real problems. It does have alot of stretch to it but plenty strong enough to hold a tarp. In the past I tried to break the line by over stretching it with a figure 9 but it would not break and when I set up my tarp with it I just pull some of the stretch out of it before attaching my tarp. I have since moved to a line with less stretch but for the money it's great to use. It works perfect for pullouts and prussics hold well on it.

Put two feet of it between your hands and pull- it stretches at least 30%, at least the stuff I have does.

Mason line is meant to support its own weight as a straight line, and let people trip over it without snapping (which explains the stretch.) IMO, those properties make it great for tarp tie-downs, but awful as a ridgeline.

I would even mess with it. Good line is pretty cheap anyways. I don't see any reason to settle for masons line.
It's only an addiction if you're trying to quit

Mason line doesn't hold knots well. Z-line is best in my opinion.
