    high sierra trip

    hey folks
i am doing a trip in the ansel adams wilderness in late sept and am torn between my options in the likely event that i have to '[shudder]' go to ground.
i have a full length underquilt," hudson river" and a big agnes inflatable,.
my preference would be to use the uq with maybe a thin foam 3/4 length pad as a supliment rather than lugging the "ba" and having all the issues associated with a pad in my 1.0dbl wbbb .
    what are your thoughts
    bill

I don't think you need to worry about it. Ansel Adams has some high alpine spots but you will not be without places to hang.

    Which trails?

i don't know our exact route yet, but my buddy who puts these trips together tries to get above treeline as much as possible

Ah. One of those guys. If you can get him to hike high and camp low, tho, you'll not have much of an issue with the hammock.

But yeah, people determined to camp high, that's a different issue - for longer trips with lots of alpine I usually take the pad instead of the uq. However, there's been a couple where the entire trip was supposed to be above treeline, and then there were trees at every campsite! It's harder when you have tenters in the group who won't accommodate your hanging habit.

i have been in kings canyon and above tuolumne without any trouble, i can use rocks to hang if need be, but i'm not familiar with the ansel adams area, and hate the idea of carrying an inflatable pad if i can hang most nights, we will probably do a few nights in yosemite and then go to ansel adams for about ten days

The terrain from Yosemite to Sequoia is pretty much all the same - great views, high passes, lots of granite... you can expect a lot of gorgeous scenery and more of the pines and firs you'll get in Yosemite. I've been in from the west side trailheads and gone down the JMT into AA.

That sucks you are going to one of the most beautiful places and you can't use a hammock, because some guy wants to sleep on the rocks? You might as well pack a tarp tent then.

oh i'll have my hammock, if i take my tent i will have to be on the ground every night , so i might as well be comfortable most nights than none

I would be prepared for the possibility of 20 degree temps in late September above 12K feet.

It gets cold quick out here at elevation.
