DIY asym ultralight tarp with side panels

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1410821711.310187.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1410821731.446110.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1410821748.337319.jpg

I am working over some ideas for my new DIY ultralight asym tarp. the base pattern is from diygear.com but I am toying with the ideas of adding removable (doors?) to both ends, this is primarily for adding rain protection so that the end of my hammock will have a better chance of staying dry. I was thinking to attach them with Velcro or snaps. The pictures aren't the best but it will give you an idea of what I am thinking. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I will start construction next week. Thanks in advance.

it kinda looks familiar, but that's probably a good thing because if i've seen something like that somewhere else that means someone else thought it was a good idea too

I'd just sew the doors in. Snaps/velcro will add weight, and probably not hold the greatest. This is something where you'll either keep it, or never use it. if you don't want it, a seam ripper is all you'll need.

Looks like a neat idea. I would probably skip the fasteners too.

It reminds me of a prototype cuben tarp that was sold here a while back. I think it was Fractowl or someone. Sorry if I got your name wrong.

OK i have spent the evening putting together several scale models of this tarp. The first picture is the plans I am using as my base from DIYGEAR.com in the pictures of my scale model the one is the tarp with no modifications with a to scale hammock hanging under it and the second is what i have come up with. it has 2 feet hanging vertical on the end as the doors. all total it should add aprox. 12 Square feet of fabric weighing about 1 ounce so I am hopeing to have the whole tarp under 7 ounces (not including suspension.
Thanks for the suggestions i will probably just sew them on permanently as was mentioned earlier it will definitely save weight.

WV made a pretty sweet asym cf tarp with doors. https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...and-tell/page2 post number 17 has a drawing of the design and there are two vids. It sems like you want to achieve something similar and it may be worth asking wv for some detailed specs?

I wish I could remember who but someone made endcaps out of polycro that when over the ends of their hammock and provided the protection you're looking for.

Ok so this is what I ended up with. The main tarp is 5'x9' parallelogram with 18" tall doors. In the picture you can see it with my 1.6oz HyperD ripstop hammock. Whatcha think!?
I uploaded a quick video to YouTube if you want to check that out as well. just excuse my bad video making!!
