Wonderful tool. I used it to make my first Whoopie sling just now and I saw your program tells you how to Whoopie the ridge line. I bought a spool of zing it for the ridge line, but since I'm just building my first hammock, it makes total sense to me to have it adjustable and "tune up" to a fixed length in the future if I want to save some grams.

How does the math hold up with zing-it? For ASR only, of course!

I made one, and it seems to be pretty solid; just curious if I might run into trouble later.

    Whoopie Sling Calculator

I began knocking together this worksheet so I didn't have to continuously, laboriously, and often incorrectly figure out my Whoopie measurements. Then I found the one created by NomadicPsyche. I put some of the stuff he'd done into my sheet... if it helps anyone that's great. I will put some tools and specifications for some other items as soon as I can. If anyone wants specific line or hardware added just let me know and I'll try to get them in there.

    Hang in there,

A hanging, though, was something different. I got to thinking. We hadn’t never been to nothing just to have a good time. A hanging was special and we was all getting to go.

A fid is a splicing tool. There are several variations, used for different types of rope or different splicing techniques. Most common are tubular fids, however the Selma fids and Brian Toss wands are most popular for those doing regular splicing of ropes like doublebraid or simple bury splices in 12 strand, conical fids are most popular for 3 strand. Pull-through, splicing wands, or wire fids are also popular for simple bury splices, and can be improvised quite readily. For most hammock-related splicing, wire fids and improvised tubular fids are quite popular, knitting needles are a good example, and a piece of doubled-over piano wire makes an excellent wire fid.

Fids are sized based on the diameter of what you are splicing. Each diameter has a specific fid length, 21 times the diameter of the rope. An easy example would be a 1" rope would require a 21" long fid. Some people use 22 times the diameter of the rope, although most manufacturers define a fid length as 21.

Long fid and short fids are just a division of a normal fid length. Most popular professional fids that are diameter specific are marked on the fid by some means to indicate the long fid and short fid length. While this length does vary a little bit, the most common length is 30% of total fid length is the short fid length, 70% is the long fid.

An example where this would be used would be marking the rope for entry and exit points. When splicing non-core-dependent double braid, you would mark the core at a point we'll call 1. From there you would measure 1 short fid and mark again, we'll call this 2. From mark 2 you would measure one fid length plus one short fid length and make mark 3. You would then use these marks as your entry and exit points for burying the cover within the core. A visual example of this exact process is described in step 3 of the following document. While this is double braid and hammock-related splicing is almost always 12 strand of some sort, this does not change the nature of a fid length, and corresponding long and short fid lengths.

It's very hard to find a fid that's small enough for 7/64, thats not a wire but if you go up a size and want to splice 1/8 amsteel then .. ubraidit.com has a nice tubular fid that works great, go to the splicing tools page and buy the smallest (first) one at the top of the list, you will become a master at splicing overnight

Redden Marine sells them, for 7/64 and 1/8. I didn't check the online store but I was just in the Bellingham, WA store two weeks ago looking at them. They had the tubular version. Around $5.
