    Sierra Desert: Limited Trees...Suspension?

    Hi,
Any suggestions on how to sling a hammock so that a suspension system is immune to rock abrasion? Sometimes, trees are really hard to come by where I live, what trees we have usually large Junipers.

I've thought about "wedges" used by climbers, with steel cables that come from them, but cracks aren't always easy to find in boulders.

I thought about steel cable, but that's a bit heavy...

    Dunno......

    Thanks, Guys!

I wonder if you could use a protective sleave that you could slide to cover abrasion points. Braided sleave faucet supply line is the image that comes to mind. Perhaps using a tough material would give the desired effect.

    Yeagh...

That's a good idea. Do you think they sell the "sleeving" at hardware stores? This is something definitely worth looking into. Thanks for the suggestion! I also thought about just using webbig to wrap around the rocks. Will keep you posted.

You can go to a climbing store or a place like REI and they have several different "sleeve" options for climbing rope. Something like this rope protector might work well.

Happy searching and let us know what you come up with.

Home Depot will have the tubing with the cord woven into it that would work just like the faucet supply lines.

There are a couple of threads runnin' around this place that deal with "rock-hanging".
a diligent search may turn up some answers. Cams and/or wedges were used..maybe one of the authors will chime in..

I've used cams shoved in cracks, webbing wrapped around boulders, and combinations of the two. The Strapworks webbing really holds up the best from my experiences. Yes, there is some abrasion, but it isn't much more than cosmetic with the handful of times I've hung above treeline.

The biggest issue is the amount of webbing/cord you need to carry above what you normally would carry. I do it a couple of times a year, but I wouldn't want to deal with it on a routine basis.
