anyone using a mini DIY hammock for gear under their main hammock

I just tried this out on rainy sunday in the woods with a friend, and we both loved it. hang it up quick and easy, and just dump in there whatever you want to put in there.
Disorganised and organised at the same time, but off the ground, and easily reachable.

I used a full size DIY hammock, but will now make a smaller one (like I have for my kids) to experiment with it. I'd like to be able to stow my pack in it too.

Anybody out there also trying this?

I'm not using one yet, but it's close to the top of my list of gear that I intend to make or buy in the near future. I like this one from JRB:

I'm starting to think a little more critically about my gear, and I can't see packing a gear hammock unless it has other uses too, and the one in the link looks like it would fit the bill very nicely.

I've used a ENO Single as a gear hammock before. It worked very well, but it was too big (everything slid toward the center anyways.) I would love to have a slightly smaller version - say 2/3 size - to play around with. When I used mine I was hanging in dry brush/Oak Fosrest, so not having stickers in everything was a huge plus for me.

that's nice. I see what you mean with being critical and why multiple uses are a must for you.
For me, a 3 oz gear hammock / chair with it's own suspension system is fine for experimenting at the moment

nice trip report. A full hammock is too big, I agree. I'm trying my kids' hammock of about 1.6 meters.

A gear hammock could double as a pack cover if you add a channel along the perimeter and sew in 1/2" waistband elastic. I might add small pockets on the ends to stow the suspension while in cover mode. I have an order fromOWF due to arrive tomorrow! !!

i would and i really like the idea as well as the jrb ghpc, but since i hang my hammock low - so my legs can reach the ground - there is never enough space left for anything but a few inches of air... must give it some thought i guess.

I'm looking at this as well, but I definitely want it to work as a camp seat as well. I'm thinking that I will add the drawstrings so that it will also work as a pack cover, making it a gear hammock/camp seat/pack cover/signaling device (since I'm making it out of blaze orange material ).

I also set my hammock up pretty low, so I'm not sure how well it will work running it under. I think that I'm going to add a tab to the bottom of mine so that I can stake it out and pull it off to the side. Got that idea from MacEntyre. . .

Love to see some more pictures of folks that are actually using theirs.

I have one i Made a while back .... it's a pack cover/Gear hammock like the one JRB sells ... it spends most of it's days in my pack
sometimes i'm just too lazy to set it up
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I have experimented with my Bushman's Chair that Paul at AHE sells as a gear hammock. Unfortunately/fortunately MandyDawn found out how comfortable it can be when sitting by the fire, taking an extended break on the trail that I feel I may never see it again. Looks like Paul may be getting some more business soon!!!!!
