I always tell people that if I can sew, anyone can sew. Take some scrap fabric and just sew around on it until you get the hang of the foot pedal. After that, read the manual so you can wind the bobbin without asking your wife for help everytime you run out of thread, and you're all set!
Just for the record, we use an old Brother sewing machine, a 1950's Viking Husqvarna for sewing straps, and we also have a 1960's Singer Touch-and-Swear, oops, I mean, Touch-and-Sew.
