Tree huggers made from rock climbing tape/webbing?

G'day Folks,

I'm new to the exciting world of hammock camping and am totally psyched to make my own hammock

So, in my quest for hammock-making materials, I have stumbled across some cheap rock climbing tape/webbing with a 17kN rating. I was wondering if anyone here has used this stuff before, and if so, what did you think of it? Do you reckon it would make a good tree hugger?

Climbing tape is just fine(even if it is overkill strength wise), although heavy and bulky.
Polyester webbing is both lighter, cheaper, less bulky and don't stretch

Nylon is stretchier than polyester, especially when it absorbs moisture. Depending on the length of the tree straps and the weight suspended it may or may not be an issue.

I say, give it a try and see. If you find yourself too close to the ground in the morning (been there, done that) you can convert to polyester seat belt web later.

I used the stuff and found it way too stretchy for me I woke up on the ground. The poly straps from strapworks.com work lots better because they don't streatch. I use the nylon ones for my kids. They are 5,3 and 1 so they're not heavy enough to streatch it.

Thanks everybody Sounds like climbing tape's not the way to go then, I'll keep on looking. (Wish we had a Strapworks here in Australia, the shipping rates are a bit crazy)

I've used 1" nylon webbing and it has a lot of stretch, just make sure you set your hang higher and you should be fine, I'd get about 6" of stretch out of 6' straps....

Seatbelt webbing is polyester.

Now, I assume from seeing the Mad Max movies that Aussies have lots of automobile wrecks, so it follows that there are lots of auto scrap yards. The webbing from the two front belts of one vehicle should make two good-sized tree straps.

Ha ha Possibly the best Aussie film! (Also the last good Mel Gibson film before he was a raving looney). Classic. Fortunately, I lucked out today and found some poly webbing at the local boating shop :-) That said, I would have had some fun digging through those car wrecks. Who knows what you could find there.

anyone out there know of what kind of weight difference there is between the two? I just picked up some 1" nylon climbing tape at
REI the other night. I chose it because it seemed lighter in my hands. I asked the guy that worked there but he didn't know. The stretch makes sense for a climber, don't think it will be a huge issue hanging my hammock, I'll just hang it tighter...

Ive just got some 2" polypropylene webbing, would this be ok to use as tree huggers?
