    Overnight near Atlanta?

My daughter is having a sleepover next Friday and I've been asked to make myself scarce that night.

Does anyone know of a spot near the Atlanta area that I can hang for a single night? Most of the regular campgrounds around here require a two-night minimum.

I won't have the time to travel far since I'm working the first half of the day. Still, if anyone knows of a hammock-friendly spot that I can set up for one night I'd be grateful to hear about it.

    Thanks,

    - Mark (S-4-C)

Not sure if its changed, but, at Stone Mountain Park Campground, the two night minimum used to be only if you reserved a spot. First come/first served could camp for a single night. The website seems to say this still, "If you arrive without a reservation, spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a two-night minimum stay with a reservation (3 night minimum on Memorial Day Weekend, 4th of July Weekend and Labor Day Weekend)." Might want to give them a call to confirm that.

Depending on where you are at in Atlanta, Pine Mountain might be an option. I live in Columbus and head up there pretty often for an overnight. Probably be an hour drive or so for you, but it is nice.

If you are thinking of driving to Pine Mtn, then check out ****'s Creek or Bogg's Creek just north of the Cleveland area. About 45 min from Gainesville. Bogg's Creek has established sites but is a nice area and hanging would not be a problem (lots of trees).

Probably not a couple of hours out of Lawrenceville. Been there twice in the last 2 years. Go through Helen, Ga., after going past all the tourist traps, on the north side of town take your 1st left across the Chatahochee River and then a quick right following the river. Go until you find your spot! Beautiful country.

Strapped-4-cache, did you find a place to hang for the weekend? Heading back up that way next month during springbreaks. I'll be hanging at my daughters if not out in the woods

What part of Atlanta do you live in? How far do you want to drive? There are so many choices!-----------If you want to go south, I agree with the Pine Mountain trail suggestion. West, the Pinhoti trail isnt far, North?---------the Cohutta wilderness is only a couple of hrs up the road. -----Springer Mtn, Any where on the A.T. etc etc---I'm not sure what the official policy is at GA state parks concerning hammocks, but along the Pine Mtn trail they are very hammock friendly. ( at the campground at FDR state park, Ive seen alot of hammocks used--more every year! The campground staff are really nice and laid back. I dont think you would have any trouble there, and its a nice little campground)
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.
