Timberr, the mitten hooks are promissing, but I want a closed loop to avoid punctures.

Red, those look very promising. I may order some.

    Thanks

Hardware stores carry plastic chain, cut a few links apart and you'll have your solution.

I got a few of those doo-dads Red linked. I'll see how they work. Maybe a rubber washer as the "button" will grab and hold better.
If they work I could send ya some.

Mitten hooks aren't very strong. A sufficient lengthwise pull will make the hook straighten out. It bends back when the strain is released. I've also had them break off, which I'd guess is what would happen when used with the button. How about one of the wire snaps used for fishing? They're often sold with swivels attached as "snap-swivels" but they come separately too. Here's the first example I could find.

How about a knot made out of paracord? I did that to a guide gear tarp a friend of mine gave me today. Seemed to do pretty good and i don't think it will punture the tarp. I did make the knot about the size of the tip of my finger and used paracord to tie around it and make a loop to tie the ridgeline to.

You could just adapt the soft shackle idea.

Use the button and a soft shackle.

Position button, open the loop, put over button and fabric and close loop.

The soft shackle can be used elsewhere also, multi-purpose.

    2 questions re soft shackles.
I have made some whoopies, but no soft shackles.

    Is the soft shackle adjustable?
If not, that means I have to make the loop the exact right size.

Do you think the shackles will bunch the fabric? I feel the paperclip method bunches much less than the pebble and line method.

    Soft shackles are not adjustable.
