    Eastern NC hang April 15 - 17

A small group of us are planning to hang at Merchants Millpond State Park the weekend of April 15 - 17, 2011.

We've reserved a paddle-in remote site. If you do not have a canoe or kayak, canoes are available for rent at the launch.

For those not familiar with Merchants Millpond, its one of the most beautiful paddle trails in North Carolina. Its located near Gatesville, NC.

There are plenty of trees for everybody. Let me know if you wish to join us.

    Sounds like a cool hang.
I'm interested, but not optimistic that I can work out the logistics.
If I can make it, I'll bring my Tarpon 160 and my hammock gear.
Might bring a young'in with me as well, although I'll end up towing them most of the way, as none of them have much paddling endurance.
I would be driving from the Burlington area, so looking at about a 3.5 hour drive to get there.

I checked the family schedule and see that this is the first weekend of my kid's spring break... so not likely that I'll make to this paddle/hang. Will update here if that changes.
Y'all have fun and be safe.

Hmm, I DO have that weekend off for the airshow at SJAFB but I might be willing to skip that for this possibly. Especially if I find out they aren't going to be flying any Raptor's.

So many trips, so little time.

How many miles are you planning on floating?
Is this part of the Great Dismal Swamp? Always wanted to float there.

Gqgeek -- Sorry it took me so long to respond.

How far are we going to paddle? It depends on what the group wants to do. From the campsite there are options as short as one mile and possibly as long as six or seven miles through a winding stream. There is also the possibility of paddling about eight miles from the park to Gatesville (and, continuing for twenty or thirty miles downstream to the Albemarle Sound if you are so inclined).

The Great Dismal Swamp is nearby, but cannot be reached by water from Merchants Millpond ... er, let me correct that ... it would be a trip of fifty or sixty miles via the Albemarle Sound (Merchants Millpond is far more beautiful and interesting than the Dismal Swamp).

    Hope you can join us.

    obxh2o,
Is this a family hang? Is anyone bringing their wives/kids? I've been meaning to check out that park for years and think my wife would enjoy the scenery. Thanks.

Yes, this is a family friendly hang. At least two spouses are coming, perhaps more. Kids are more than welcome to join us. Regarding scenery, this is one of the most beautiful paddle trails in the state.

A buddy of mine and I reserved a paddle in sight for the same weekend. And then I find this thread! At least I know we won't be the only 'hangers' in the area! Should be a great time, it is a beautifull area.

Come join us if you wish. We've got one of the group paddle-in sites.
