Tent or hammock for my Australia trip?

    Hi!

I'm a backpacker from Sweden. I'm flying to Aus tomorrow. I'm spending about 3 months in Aus and I want to camp free (and fish) as much as possible. I'm in Perth early feb, great ocean road in middle feb, NZ in march, east coast in april, red center and darwin in may. My original plan was do get a 2 man tent, a pad and a blanket but then I heard about hammocks.

Hammocks sound cool for these reasons:
    1) They are lighter than tents(?)
    2) You are harder to spot and therefor can camp in places where you are not allowed(?)
    3) Hammocks are just cool.

    Have some questions:
    a) What do you do with your packpack when you make camp? If you have a tent you just put it inside...
    b) Do you think I will have a problem finding places to hang my hammock in the named locations?

    Thanks

    Hi
I'm in Perth and can help you out if you like. I have been able to hang my hammock in all places that I have camped so far.
Be aware that in Feb it will be the top end of 30 degree C most days perhaps.
Where will you be camping in Perth and I will tell you more.

Any stuff you recommend buying with my hammock? I suppose for atleast the start I wont need a sleeping bag with the hammock...

In your opinion what are the ups and downs of a hammock compared to a tent?

Do you have a tarp? you will need one.
I always use a sleeping bag and I use it open like a quilt, they can be found quite cheep here AU$50 and might save you bringing one.
It does get cool over night and I have an under quilt that I use now or you could use a foam ccf pad. You may be more used to the cool though

I would never go back to sleeping in a tent now, but after saying that I am doing a 5 night trip along the coast and there are no trees big enough to hang from so that may cause problems.

It all depends on where you are going to be camping, let me know where your going and I can advise you better.

I arrived in Perth yesterday and have bought camping equipment and fishing gear. I went for a tent instead. Spending about 10 days in the area south of Perth. Unfortunately I haven't found anyone in Perth who wants to share a car for a camping trip down South. So what I'm looking for are nice free or cheap camping spots that are accessible by public transport. The locations I'v planed to go to are Rottnest island, Margaret river, and Albany.

    Thanks

If you started a bit earlier with your call for help in Margaret river and Albany, I would have had lots of help in those areas.
The Cape to Cape walk through Dunsborough to Augusta would be great this time of year although I would recommend you carry lots of water as little is available along the track, once you get to one of the huts then you would be ok for water.
Albany along the Bib track would be very good. With huge big trees all along the track, lots of black bream (fish) to be found in the rivers if you know where to look.
Transport to those areas I could have arranged for for you if I had known.

If anyone else comes to Perth PLEASE look me up.

I'm a fan of the hammock camping because it's cheap, easier to hide from rangers, less chance of damaging the flora, and I can cook under shelter.

I hang my backpack in a tree or lie it under my hammock.
