    Allegheny National Forest

Who knows anything about backpacking in the Allegheny National Forest? I see part of the NCT goes through there, but haven't spent much time researching it.
Its about a half way point for me and a friend to do a meet-up weekend hike. Anyone have any experience/suggestions?
    Good luck,

The NCT it good almost anywhere. There other trails too in the ANF. Just depends on what you are looking to do. There is a great section of the NCT near Marienville. Further north near Warren Pa is nice too. Hearts content area--Pretty big virgin stand of timber.
I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.

I'll vouch for Hearts Content. I hiked that area several times a summer through most of my childhood. There are several great weekend hikes, including a couple good loops you can do.

I live one county west of the western edge of the ANF, and this whole area is beautiful. Some good hills, but nothing like the Whites or the Smokies. Most of the mountains around here are a bit more rolling and lower than those larger ranges.

This thread is discussing a NCT hike in May, and there's been some discussion of trail conditions. Might help fill a few gaps for you. Could always come join us too!

Minister Creek Loop is a favorite of mine - had my bachelor party there.

6 mile loop with a nice overlook and a creek to keep you company most of the way.

Nice and secluded for a relatively easy hike in/out.

Thats all great info guys, thanks a lot. Is is designated sites or camp anywhere, or do you have to go stealth?

Minister is camp anywhere. There are some more "established" sites where people have built stone fire rings, chairs, etc. but you are able to set up shop anywhere you please.

Google Minister Creek and plenty of pics and testimonials come up.

Every part of the trail within the national forest is well marked and cleared off.

I would recommend Tracy Ridge and Morrison trails as well. They both have established primitive campgrounds along the reservoir, but you can camp almost anywhere in the Allegheny National Forest as long as you are 1500 feet away from the reservoir (except for the established camps). Morrison is about a 10 miles loop and Tracy Ridge has several small loops, so you can easily pick your distance. The NCT runs through the Tracy Ridge system along the Allegheny Reservoir.
