    Clark Insulating Pockets

Clarks claim - Patented pockets for insulation (Four-season models): The Clark North American is the only hammock that removes any need for insulating pads in most weather. The insulating pockets provide a stable air mass underneath you to block cold air from reaching your back.

I would say yes for the most part.
In cold weather I use the pockets to store extra clothing, that actually works pretty well.
The fact that you can close in the top of the N.A. to capture in heat, as well as the pockets below providing a layer of air space works very well.
A simple wall-mart blue Pad, has always been the only other addition to prevent cold shoulders.
I also use leaves as insulation in large bags in the pockets-That also works.
I just started learning on how to pack lighter, so I will not have much clothing to put in the pockets.
So in average cold weather ( like 50-40 degrees F), I think leaves and a bit of clothing will work fine.
But I just purchased a KAQ 2/3 underquilt for those 40 and below temps to really stay toasty warm.

Think of it this way. The pockets are an underquilt without any insulation. They will provide similar warmth as an underquilt that does not have any. Probably gets you about 10* warmer than you could go without them.

as a clark owner I can say that it jut works. but it works because you put you gear in the pockets, not because theyre full of some kind of "wonder air"

    I used to own two.
The pockets work, but not that well.
At least, in my experience, they did not provide adequate warmth in below freezing temperatures . . . even when I filled them with gear. My mini-quilts worked pretty well. But . . . I still think an actual underquilt will outperform the Clark pockets by a pretty good margin.

    Shame Shame

How can one question the magical properties of the encapsulated atmosphere within the "pocket" retained there by the super space age developed locking system. After all they come from Jack the provider of fine magical garbanzos, and who also started trading Holsteins.

Hi! This is my first message here

I'm going to make myself a hammock. I want it to have bottom insulation pockets like in Clark's.

So here is a question for Clark hammock users:
What is the fabrics used at the bottom? Is it coated, DWR or uncoated and unproofed?

Whoops...nevermind. I had a comment but then noticed that this thread was almost 2 years old so my comments come too late.

Doesn't matter if it really works...

Probably I will decide to take uncoated (as I red that even for additional bottom is used uncoated and it's more comfy).

I think gaining 20 F degrees for less than 100g is a good deal. For warm conditions should be enough

Tomek, ck out this link for a diy hammock with baffeled pockets underneath http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=48581

The concept works pretty good with a gathered end or bridge hammock. (and its really not all that hard to do ) Heres a question for all you clark fans out there: are the pockets on a clark hammock baffled?
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.
