You don't need a pad inside the HH SS ( assuming you are using the full system of undercover, HH pad, space blanket.) The key being how well the system works for you. I'm ok with that system into the mid to high 30s, and a lot colder if I stick a down or fleece jacket under the HH pad. Though some folks can go lower than mid 30s, quite a few more probably can't get quite that low.
Okies thanks. The SS system doesn't come with the space blanket, I have to buy that separately right?
I'll go low 30's in mine with undercover, HH pad, and space blanket. I use a coleman max 0 deg bag as a top quilt. Wouldn't think of putting a pad in there too. But Low 30's is about as low as I plan to ever go. If it dips below that, it would be an accident. To me, it's just not fun anymore when I have to bundle up and be uncomfortable just to be outside. It's the hardest thing... to leave the comfort and warmth of my hammock to start the day or answer nature's call. Some people love the cold. I like 70 degrees just fine.

That's correct. Just get a ~ $2, ~ 2 oz space( or "emergency") blanket from Wal-Mart or wherever. Nicer, at about $4 and ~ same weight but much nicer, go to REI or wherever you can find it and get a Heat Sheet.

Heat Sheet is much nicer, but the WM one will definitely get the job done. It is more noisy than the Heat Sheet, but I never hear it once I am in the hammock.
Just put it on top of your pad and all other added bottom insulation. It makes a big difference and will help keep condensation out of the insulation- or at least it does for me.
Thanks! I went ahead and ordered the heat shield.
Have had my SS down to 17 with no added under insulation, used a five degree bag to sleep in. The space blanket is a must.
Wow! Very good results indeed! I must be a southern cold weather wimp- I don't think I could be comfy at that temp without adding a bit in the UC. I was real proud when I was warm at ~15 after adding the kidney/torso pads and a down vest to cover part of my back and a fleece jacket for the rest. Good results!
Were you warm or just barely getting by? Were you inside a synthetic bag, or using the bag as a TQ? Any condensation problems?
