Save another ounce on your tree straps

Not sure if others are doing tree straps this way, but I was wanting to shave some more weight as well as well as keep things simple so I made some new tree straps. I used webbing at the tree end, about 16" long with sewn loops at each end and made approximately 3' extensions coming off these loops with locked-brummel fixed loops. I had found a broken Topeka hand pump and used 1.5" long sections of it's small aluminum shaft as my toggles--I threaded one of the 7/64" amsteel tails through the inside of the tube and finished off the end with a short back splice so I wouldn't loose it. Very happy with the final outcome. The tree slings weigh about 44 grams compared to the 75 grams of just the polyester straps--about an ounce savings. I tested out both my straps/amsteel for strength by hanging on them with my climbing harness and then I checked the strength of the toggle on a marlin spike hitch the same way. Amsteel whoopies on my hammock are color coded (Yellow at head, Orange at foot) and my tree straps are the same--just so I can always hang my hammock consistently when I am tired. Simple, lighter, strong and no loosing your marlin spike. :-) I dig it.

Now if you wanted to save a little more you could switch to dynaglide rope.

I have heard that Dynaglide is more slippery--any issues holding a MLS? The next rope order will be for dynaglide, but not time soon. I have tons of other things on the list before shaving those grams...

that's nice, I've been mulling over something like that but haven't done it yet. Does your weight include the toggle? No trail sticks using this approach, unless they're like 1" thick!

No--my toggles added about 8 grams--they were an afterthough (which I really like). The total weight for (2) 7.5' straps w/ toggles is 52 grams. Pretty compact, too. I'm gonna hang in them tonight--wife's out of town. :-)

lol, now to be the ultimate gram weenie you just have to get rid of that heavy 7/64ths amsteel and make those suckers out of dynaglide! Seriously though. Innovative approach to weight savings.

    Keep it up.

    Dan.
