Not sure if others are doing tree straps this way, but I was wanting to shave some more weight as well as well as keep things simple so I made some new tree straps. I used webbing at the tree end, about 16" long with sewn loops at each end and made approximately 3' extensions coming off these loops with locked-brummel fixed loops. I had found a broken Topeka hand pump and used 1.5" long sections of it's small aluminum shaft as my toggles--I threaded one of the 7/64" amsteel tails through the inside of the tube and finished off the end with a short back splice so I wouldn't loose it. Very happy with the final outcome. The tree slings weigh about 44 grams compared to the 75 grams of just the polyester straps--about an ounce savings. I tested out both my straps/amsteel for strength by hanging on them with my climbing harness and then I checked the strength of the toggle on a marlin spike hitch the same way. Amsteel whoopies on my hammock are color coded (Yellow at head, Orange at foot) and my tree straps are the same--just so I can always hang my hammock consistently when I am tired. Simple, lighter, strong and no loosing your marlin spike. :-) I dig it.
