The first tent my then young family had was hanging over the swingset to air out one day after we got back from camping. I unloaded the rest of the car/trailer, started laundry and went out back to find my Beagle hanging from one of the peg hold downs. Actually got their just in time to see it tear free and him go running after another one. He was thoroughly enjoying the new 'Toy' that I had given him.
Ya just have to figure those pets will do the worst with no intention of harming you sometimes.

!/16"? I'm picturing a spot where the threads have been displaced, but not torn. If that's the case, you may be able to "milk" the fabric and close the opening...sil should lock it all back together. Maybe?

Glue a small patch of fabric (s.a. tarp) over the hole with seam sealer. If the hole is really tiny and won't be under undue stress you can probably get away with just the sealer.
