I know this thread is many years old, but I just had the same idea and searched for it. Glad I found some like-minded folks!
Seems like the easiest DIY item ever, other than using up the 765 yds of thread, twice
Here is the weight (MARA70 spool): 2.95g/.106oz
Tube seems very sturdy, it is very stiff and doesn't want to flex. I'm usually leery of plastic, but this feels so strong. I'd love to see someone do one of those stress-to-failure tests on one to see exactly how strong.

Funny. I've actually kept a few pairs for use as backup toggles. Thought it was a clever idea and hadn't ever seen anyone using them for it. Just shows how much ingenuity and experience is buried in the threads on our forum.
