10 degree warmth in sleeping bag cocoon

Slept Friday and Saturday nights in breezy 10 degree cold air, up on a mountain ridge, toasty and warm and comfortable. Use my Kelty Light Year down 20 degree bag with it zippered footbox open an inch to let me pull it over and around my hammock. In I go, up goes the zipper, and I and my hammock are cocooned in warm down with no fiddling with top or under quilts. The Grand Trunk Nano 7 with whoopies and structurual ridge line and tree straps stays pulled through the sleeping bag and I can still stuff the whole bag/hammock/suspension setup into the Kelty compression stuff sack that came with the bag. Ultralight. Ultra warm. Disclaimers. I had my MacCat deluxe tarp over me, with the tarp pulled within about 3 inches of the ground at its bottom sides, but no wings/doors added. I slept in Smartwool top/bottoms and a down jacket, with a super lightweight breathable pair of pants and jacket as my outer layer, and wore a smartwool balaclava and light fleece beanie. This made getting out of the bag in 10 degree air less painful, since I had my warm clothing on in the bag, and it effectively pulled the 20 degree bag rating down to probably zero or maybe 5 below. I really was plenty warm inside my little cocoon. I'm very happy with my setup. Oh, by the way, it was on Pennsylvania's Elk Trail. Lovely weekend hike with a high school friend I hadn't seen in 30 years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xUY6_uMGQY

I run a very similar sleeping setup!

Marmot Pinnacle cocooned over a Nano 7. Love the weight, love the warm, and being an above treeline sleeper once in a while, the sleeping bag is more of a multi tasker than a top quilt.

    Cheers!

I see you have a MacCat Micro. Do you get enough coverage in lousy weather? The Nano 7 that we both own is small, so is my MacCat Deluxe crazy overkill? I'd love to shave off some grams.

Good video, Motorapido! Do you guys find that the sleeping bag forces you to sleep down the center of the hammock---banana style? I want to try this with an old North Face Big Kazoo down bag I have, but I'll have to sew a hole in the very bottom of the footbox to make it slide onto the hammock. Plus, I worry I won't be able to get comfortable laying down the middle.

    It depends

I would think it would depend on the size of the sleeping bag, whether or not you could lay on a diagonal. I use a square foot mummy bag which allows for more positions. I've slept diagonally and on my side using my sleeping bag as a pod.

I think it has pretty well been confirmed this winter that these various pod approaches – whether commercial as with the Peapod, or just a well rigged sleeping bag – especially with one of the narrower hammocks- is about as bombproof as it gets when it comes to being warm in a hammock. Glad to hear it worked out so well for you!

The Peapod idea originally came to Ed Speer on a trip where one of his buddies decided to try the sleeping bag around the hammock approach. And it worked pretty good! Hence the birth of the Speer Peapod!

I have a Kelty LY 20 as well. I'm very tempted to try it after this weekend. I was out in the mid 20s, and was o.k. until about 4 a.m. My TQ and 3/4 UQ just weren't cutting it....
