Last year Land and I met up in North Georgia for a motorcycle gathering. We were the only hammock campers, the rest of the guys either stayed in tents, rented a room, or just went home. It got down into the 20's both nights and each morning Land and I met at the campfire and chatted about how comfy we slept while the other guys were still shivering in their tents.

IIRC Land uses a BBWB w/ UQ and superfly pinned to the ground. Dont know what type of bag, I'm sure he will chime in if he reads this.

I used my HH w/ fly, Sierra Designs SFC Hibernator bag, thermorest, and walmart big blue tarp for wind. Once I got the pad situated I slept perfect. No cold spots, and woke up in the am feeling great.

My 15 degree bag is not worth squat alone, maybe mid 60s but a blue pad changes the equation. If you bring a bag you need a pad. I find that at 75 I need a pad or my back is getting cool.

I slept in 17* overnight in a 20* synthetic bag, with a partially inflated pad under me, and just a base layer on. I didn't wake up until 1030 the next morning! I can't even sleep that late when I'm at home in my bed. So yes, it can be done.

Used a 20-degree synth bag in 55 degree weather... in a hammock...

    and froze my butt off...

    Then I found HF.

Stupid part was: I had my thermarest sitting right there on the ground...

SO: 50-degrees and only a bag? NO. Add a cheap pad... Yes!
