Type of fabric for a Tarp?

I am looking at two different fabrics in which I would like to make a cat-cut tarp. I suppose that I would have to treat either of these options to make them more waterproof/resistant.

Option 1: just says 100% POLY (it feels similar to the ripstop-Nylon without the ripstop)

Option 2: 100 % Nylon (Rip-Stop Nylon)

both seem similar in weight (neither package clearly states weight). I would assume that I would need to treat both for rain protection.

I guess I just need help from the fabric gurus! Thoughts or suggestions?

Silnylon is silicone impregnated nylon for water proofness. It's light, already coated so you only need to seal the ridgeline hem.

Ditto. I don't sew, buy Silnylon is great material for a tarp. The 1.1 oz stuff is very strong and lightweight. Completely waterproof. That look like a good price too.

thank you both for the response, but this stuff is under $1 per yrd and even if i treated it I would be under 1/2 the price of the sil (I agree better option). hard to pass on this at the price.

i guess i should re-phrase my question. if you had to pick from these two which would be the better option?

Then I would go with the ripstop and do a diy silicone treatment for it.

for that price buy both make 2 and test which is better. anyone ever try to diy sil polyester?

Im a fan of ripstop. But I would use one of those waterproofers that you soak in the bath like thompsons etc
