I think carrying some formic acid would be better
Sometimes it's hard to tell polyester from nylon.
The burn test for those two is kinda similar.
One drop of formic will tell you if it's poly or nylon.
It dissolves the nylon and not the poly.
So watch out for a massive ant attack...it could very well dissolve your hammock.

So for a WalMart 41 bin raid, we need a lighter and a vial
of ants. That'll confuse store security personnel.

    Hey Hammock Engineer,

The color is royal blue. After wadding it in my hands the fabric became more limber. Would it be better to make it into a tarp or a hammock. I'm leaning towards a tarp. Would also like info. on corner reinforcement techniques.

    Thanks,BABO

I have some stuff that I bought last week that is crinkly and heavier than most I've seen. It looks like some kind of Sil. I have had a heavy bolt laying on a piece of paper towel in it for hours and it does not leak a bit, yet. It is 3.5 ounces per square yard though. It has lines like ripstop but only one direction and it pulls away from the flame, makes a black smoke for sure when it burns but I cannot distinguish one odor from another. I am guessing polyester from the black smoke. Has anyone heard of such a heavy water proof material that is maybe coated, but if so, very lightly. One side is shinier than the other. Puzzled again....Mule

I just checked the material in the water again and not even wet! Neither side gets wet, just beads water. It is .005 " thick where 1.1 sil is .0025 thick. I must have some like 3.3 silnylon?

    I'm not completly sure.

-If it has the box pattern it is ripstop. Look really close at it.
-Does the surface look smooth, or can you see really small box shaped holes. If it is smooth it is treated with something.
-Does the edges fray when you pull them? Sil impregnated does not fray, coated DWR will.
-Weigh all the fabric and divide back from there. It won't be exact, but should give you a good idea.

    Nice boy scout signature.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

Thanks, it doesn't fray. I have no idea what I would use silnylon that thick for. Thanks for the information. All you seasoned gear makers keep answering our questions over and over. You are all very kind. Thanks

I would use silnylon that thick to make a pack I would think it might be more durable than the lighter sil for that purpose.
