my general rule of thumb on temp - subtract 10 degrees from Mouth of Wilson temp forecast

btw about the directions in post #79 above - you can avoid the last stream crossing (a fairly significant stream unlikely to be rock hopable IMO) by looking for a stile in the fence to the left as you are walking in - the stile connects to a field that is below the shelter - hike up hill through field to AT. Another technique is to walk to the stream then hang a left going along the fence - you will shortly come to the AT at the foot bridge - left on AT for shelter - right to cross bridge and up the bank for the camping area I am going to use. Note the stile (a zigzag type) is fairly close to the stream as I recall - a couple hundred feet or so IIRC.

I know the weather can be really different on the mountain, but it looks like we aren't going to see the brutal cold some were hoping for. Looks like Saturday will be a great day for a hike! I hope I can see the ponies!

when i was there in nov, & took a hike down to wise shelter, i took photos of the two creek crossings.

the 1st pic (110) is of the first creek crossing.

the 2nd pic (111) is just a closer shot of the first crossing looking to the left showing rocks that could be used to cross. just beware <g>.

the 3rd pic (107) is, i belive, the second creek, which is at the stile that HOI described. i was probably standing near the stile when i took that pic & the stile would have been on my left.

yes - that is the one I was referring to - the first time I hiked that trail I did not realize the AT was just up stream from that crossing so I was a might annoyed to have crossed in (in Nov.) only to find the AT just past that point and then cut back to the foot bridge going over the same creek.

Just as another POV on the weather...I've been monitering Weatherbug for Whitetop, which is close to GHSP.

Friday - Windy, highs in the low 30's. Gusts up to 45 mph for a wind chill as much as -10 in the morning. Lows 15-20.

Saturday - Highs in the mid 40's, lows in the mid 20's.

Sunday - Highs in the upper 30's.

That's not counting the 10 degree difference most people report (and I've experienced) for the mountains there. Weatherbug also calls for snow fairly continuously between now and Friday morning, for a total possible accumulation ~ 6 inches.

Double B and I will be there sometime before lunch on Saturday with hot dogs and buns in hand. The weather sounds delightful, and I am looking forward to seeing you all there. BD

It's still looking like I'll be able to make it but I can't promise.

Anyone have a topo file of the area?
