So can I just add some pull outs to my skeeter beater to make it asym? I have looked at some of the "asym" hammocks and it looks like that is how they are made. Is this a bad idea? If so, why? Thanks!

IIRC, pullouts just give yo more room in the hammock, they don't make the hammock asym. To make an asym hammock I believe you have to cut the fabric in an asym pattern before gathering, really not sure on that. You can add pullouts if you want a little more room in your hammock. YMMV
Asym can mean the cut of the fabric, but more often refers to the cut of the bug net (Hennessy) and/laying diagonally relative to centerline of the hammock.
I don't know your model of hammock, but expect that pull outs will help some. Not as much as if the bug net shape were optimized for pull outs, but some. May make the bug net tighter in some areas than others.

rjcress is right. If you look at the HH clone thread you will see how the HH asymetrical hammocks are actually a rectangular hammock body with tie outs offset 13" on either side of the hammock centerline. This along with the way the ends are joined into a tube creates an asymetrical shape to the hammock and requires an asysmetrical shape for the attached bug net.
I say make your tie-out and reinforce them and you will be fine. Use the HH clone instructions and add your tie-outs in the same place as those diagrams show and it should do you just fine. Looking at pics of the Skeeter Beater it looks like you have plenty of etra netting so that should not be an issue.
looking at the dimensions of the Skeeter Beater 9' x 4' 5", you may have a little more difficulty getting on a diagonal due to the width even with the tie outs but they should help and worst case if they don't then just don't use the tie-outs...
four of five years ago, Hammock Engineer tried to cut a hammock in a trapazoid shape to duplicate the Hennessy Asym feel. Didn't work out too good.
People linked to the hennessy patent and studied it.
Finally, WilsonBMW dissected his Hennessy and documented the hammock size and end rolling technique. Then
Headchange4U made one and documented the process for us.
These guys were the true DIY pioneers and we owe them a large "JOB WELL DONE"!!!
The only asym pieces on a Hennessy are the bug screen and the matching shaped tarp.

Thank you guys so much for all your advice. I am still deciding if I really want to do this. At least I know that it isn't such a crazy idea.
