How do you install your grosgrain

I just finished a DIY warbird and i trimmed the whole thing in royal blue homemade bias. Trouble was keeping it even on both sides of the seam. My next hammock I will be using grosgrain. Any advice on how to keep this stuff even on both sides with outs clamping it in a vice every 2 inches.

Maybe try this and see how it works for you?

I measure out the grosgrain I need for the project, + a foot or two. Fold in half and iron it on my iron's polyester setting. Iron it 2-3" at a time and don't stay in one spot too long. I never pin it to the fabric, but just start at one end and stitch 6-8" at a time while feeding the grosgrain along the edge of the fabric. I usually do two rows of stitching along the grosgrain.

You can run an iron over it when it's folded and it keeps it a lot more even than normal.

I don't use grosgrain. Which doesn't really answer your question But grosgrain is not essential.

I run the grosgrain through a binding foot, which folds it in half and puts the stitch at the right place.

I should have went with grosgrain instead of homemade trim. Wouldn't have looked as cool but sounds like it might have been easier controlling the grosgrain than controlling 4 layers of ripstop.

I agree with Rev that grosgrain reinforcement of tarp edges is probably not necessary. A simple rolled hem will suffice, and it's lighter. However, I do use it for cat cuts or edges cut on the fabric's diagonal to control stretching. I keep the weight down by using narrow grosgrain - 3/8" is my current stock. There's no need to fold it over the edge. Just sew it on the line marked for your tarp edge (this can be a catenary, if you want), and then cut off the excess using your favorite method. Mine is using a hot soldering iron. Then roll the fabric around the grosgrain and stitch the hem. This method makes cat cuts a lot easier for me. The grosgrain is just stiff enough to use as a guide when cutting the fabric, and you can sew the rolled hem without needing to pin it, if you're careful. Of course, the tarp fabric covers the grosgrain, so you don't have a contrasting edge color, which might be a disadvantage.
