My son and I were walking through our woods the other day and saw a huge white oak that was down. The main trunk was about 3 feet in diameter and it looked like it had been wrung off by a tornado. The rest of the trunk and canopy was several feet away.
My son commented, "That's what happens when you are a big tree in a little tree world". I then noticed that all the other trees around were smaller younger trees.
I made a mental note never to camp close to the largest (or tallest) tree in the area.

Always awful. I always try to hang where if a big tree does fall it is going to catch on another or fall away from me.......hopefully.

Terrible atleast both were not killed .
True but I could not begin to fathom the pain of my bride being crushed right in front of me. When it's your time no prep will save you. In California an advanced motorcycle safety coach was recently killed riding his bike in the rain. Seems a cager lost control on the opposing lanes and bounced off other vehicles into him. It was his time...if anyone had the skills to avoid it was him.
Sad by any measure.
