It was recommended to us by the gal at Quest outfitters to use a #5 coil zipper.

Someone should patent bugnet zippers on asymmetrical bottom entry hammocks before he gets round to it!

Why did she recommend a coil zipper? If you wanted to make the bug net completely removeable- using two separating zippers, one on each side- would a coil zipper make the turn at the tie-outs? What are the pros and cons of coil vs toothed zippers?

I learned a little bit about zippers when making my HH clone. From what I've learned, coil zippers are better when the zippers need to make a turn or go around corners. Most coil zippers are also "self-healing" meaning that the zipper will still open and close even if a few of the teeth are damaged or clogged with dirt or debris. That's why most sleeping bags use coil zippers.

Tooth zipper are said to be more reliable but they don't handle corners or turns very well. Also if a tooth on the zipper is damaged or fails that means the zipper usually won't open or close properly.

Thanks...I just went to the Quest website and there are a lot of answers to zipper questions there. I know you have a removeable net on your hammock, so I assume that, if you used only two zippers, that they can make the turn at the tie-outs.

The #5 coil zipper I used make the turns on the corner just fine.

Your wife does some beautiful work! I have always been a DIYer, and as I am beginning to get into hammocking this desire is very strong! So many options to choose from! It's great to get to see such great examples.
