how to link to a post #

    Mods,
I once noticed a URL that ended in the same number as the number of the first post. I wanted to link to a different post on the same page, so I tried substituting the new post number. It worked! Lately I've wanted to link to specific posts, but the page URLs haven't used the number of the first post in a recognizable form. What did I miss in the URL the one time that it worked?

If you know the actual post #, you can link to it in the following form -

    Code:
    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?p=XXXXXX#postXXXXXX
Just replace the X's with the #.

If you don't know the post #, you can get it from the little # link in the top right of each post in a thread (same line as the timestamp). For instance, this very post's URL is -
    Code:
    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showpost.php?p=439636&postcount=2
To link to it, I simply remove the "&postcount=2" from the URL above. If I left that part in, it would display this post alone on a page by itself.

    Clear as mud?

To add a little usability tip -

Find the post you want to link to, and click it's short post # at the top right. (This is #3 on this post). When the next page comes up, click the Thread Link at the top right.

If you then copy the URL in your browser's address bar, you can use it as a direct link in whatever thread you need.

Getting there - at least a hint of translucence. Removing &postcount=N still shows post N alone, not in the context of the thread. However, this functionality may suffice for me. Thanks.

Wait! Got it. I went back and plugged the post # into your first example with "showthread". Thanks!

Thanks, Angrysparrow. Another question for the mods: How do you put a YouTube video in a post? I can put a LINK to a video, but I see posts that include a screen with a video you can click on to watch. How do you do that? Thanks, again for all the work you moderators do.

figured i would share a pm from NCpatric:

Just wanted to tell you that out of the url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqtxw4Lpv24
To embed you would put the id tag after the equals sign in between the youtube tags.
    Code:
    [Utube]jqtxw4Lpv24[/Utube]
(Except you would substitute the word YouTube instead of Utube in the example. ) Clear as mud?

    Regards, Patrick

First, look at the YouTube URL, and find the video id number. In red here -
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d82zy7J5fGA

Take that 'red' part (the id) and place it in your post between YouTube brackets like so -

    [youtube]d82zy7J5fGA[/youtube]

When you click submit, it will be added directly -

I'm sorry...I realized that afterwards. It does have to include the #postXXXXXX at the end to show in full context.
