    The JOY of Gear Making...

Well after making several hammocks, tarps, whoopies, stuff sacks, and a few other items I'm a true DIY from now on. I used to buy everything commercially and I think those days are gone for me. The excitment of planning, fabricating, and completing a project is an AWESOME feeling. I know my stuff may not have the straightest stitches or the best appearance but the "I MADE IT" goes a long way when you pull it out, set it up, and it works...The sense of pride I got after setting up my latest tarp this week was amazing, it looked fantastic and I did all the work myself...with the knowledge that I have gained for the many individuals on this forum.

I finally became a donating member this week to help pay back those guys that work so hard to make this site work for us all...A BIG THANKS TO ALL THE MODS AND MEMBERS OF THIS FORUM....

Finished HCFU Asym Hammock last night with zippered bugnet, WOW... It works.... Next up my first TQ, got 2# 700FP down on Wednesday, fabric already here so time to get crackin....

Who else loves making their own gear...
    Happy Hangin'

Its funny, my brothers and I where talking about this the other day. My twin asked if I could make something ( I forget what it is at the moment) and I said sure I have a pattern for that. He said Dude you have a pattern for everything.

Most of my patterns are scribbles on paper. I seem to be pretty good at seeing the bridge before its built ( Old line from Back To The Future )

    Yep.
    I'm hooked also.
I've alway liked creating things but...
My lungs and allergies don't do well with saw dust
I have limited need for welded stuff
Don't have machining tools or room to house them
And don't have much use for ceramics and pottery (although I have many molds and a kiln)
Exercising the thread injector is proving to be the best outlet for my creative urges so far.
I just wish I could produce things as quickly as I envision them.
Seems that for every item I complete three more are added to the to do list.

I also enjoy making most of my own gear, there is nothing I enjoy more than to pull up behind the thread injecter on a less than perfect winter night and whip up something new that I can say " I made that". The few things that I don't feel that I can handle I turn to our very own cottage industries and try to keep my money going somewhere more homegrown.

It is rewarding, frustrating, fun, challenging, cursy, mis-understood, self-satisfying, manly and awesome. Yeah.....awesome.
I like it as it is a huge avoidance-issue for me.

It really is a great feeling to see your finished project. Regardless if it may look like Frankenstein or the ugly child under the stairs. If it works, fantastic. Good luck on your top quilt.

the best hobby ever! I started making my own gear last year, and I will never go back to buying retail. I think the best part is knowing every stitch that goes into a project. Instead of blind trust, it becomes full knowledge. After a year of projects, I am finally ready to tackle my DIY backpack. In combination with my tarp, bridge hammock, quilt, and cooking setup, I will be like 90% DIY. Can't wait to show off my completed system to my friends and family!
