So I made the 2.5 hour trip to my local REI. :-) I bought two of the blue easton's to give them a try. My kit now includes two knock off coleman Groundhog look alikes and two easton's I am now debating on ordering a set of Shepards hooks or the mountain stakes with the eye loops to keep it light. I figure I can mix it up to keep my stakes light but have stakes for all conditions depending on where I hike.

I'm looking to but some new stakes, does anyone know if the Shepard Hook stakes from Zpacks are very strong? They're so lightweight...

I recently tried the mountainfitter 6" ti stakes in 35-40mph gusts. Wow really held out well. They are small enough to sneak into the rocky crevaces of the AT and long enough to maintain a good grip in the ground.

I did place rocks on top of them for fear of them being ripped out of the ground. Not very heavy rocks and not really positioned with all the rock's weight. I'd like to think they stayed in the ground all by themselves.

In any event really good first test period and I'm really satisfied with them.

    Blue Titanium Shepherd Hook

Although counter-intuitive, I took Shug and others advice and painted my new titanium shepherd hook stakes blue. Because I have aspirations of hanging with some of y'all, I took a lesson from Maine Lobstermen and painted mine with a two bar pattern to distinguish them should they ever get dropped/mixed.

I recently switched to carbon fiber stakes from titaniumgoat.com. They held in the ground on the AT in NC fine.

These are great stakes. I have a few myself and Joe is fantastic to deal with.
