    Dayton Hamvention Hang

Dayton Hamvention is May 20-22nd in Dayton, Ohio. All the ham radio operators in the crowd know what that is, but mere mortals can read up on it here.

I'll be down there for sure, and I'd wager at least a couple other hangers might be heading that way, given that there are at least a dozen other radio ops on the forum.

Anybody interested in a bit of an informal hang? Should be cheaper than a hotel, saving more money for geeky goodness .

If there's any interest, I'll start looking around for potential locations.

I'm down with that. I'll keep an eye on this thread to see what ya come up with for locations.

And here I thought it was a Hammock Hang set up by HamMike.
I like big hammocks - I cannot like.

Yeah with a name like that you'd think I'd be into Ham radios.

I wish I were going to Dayton! I am planning to hang in two weeks and operate portable.

The city I live in has a park at the highest point in the county, which has campgrounds at it. A group of us take our portable equipment up there four to five times a year and operate.

Operating conditions for me: Yaesu 857D, LDG Z11 Pro Tuner, battery power usually, and I usually use either an S9 31-foot vertical or a homebrew G5RV Jr.

It would be awesome if we could work out an informal het for Hammock hangers!

Wish I could make it this year. My first Dayton Hamvention was '78, when I was attending tech school. It was a bonanza for a electronic tech student with projects to put together for class. The flea market used to take up the entire parking lot around the arena.

Hmm, a convergence of two hobbies, COOL!

Although I might be at the Hamvention, obligations for Saturday evening will mean I can't hang with you guys. But wouldn't mind meeting up Saturday morning/afternoon somewhere... Any ideas?

I've been poking around and the only park I see that would be reasonably accessible is Sycamore State Park. It's pretty small though, only about 5 miles from HARA Arena. Maybe HamMike can offer some insight into whether camping is even allowed there?

Robbie, you're only ~2.5 hours out. I thought it was a mandatory event for hams that close. Don't they take away your license if you don't attend or something?

I had planned on doing the 98 mile NOBO hike on the NCT here in PA that same weekend, so I'd only be in Dayton for Friday night, but I recently pulled/potentially tore my Achilles tendon, so I might be down for a couple months as far as actual hiking goes. We'll see though. It's recovering quicker than expected, so I'm holding out hope.

However, if I can get a bunch of rowdy hams in hammocks together for the weekend, that might be enough of an excuse to spend the entire weekend down there for once.

Ok I did a bit more digging and there is camping at Sycamore State Park, and its convenient to the hamfest. That may mean its pretty crowded though. I'll call this afternoon and see about reservations.

Group Camp "B" contains a cabin and an open shelter with electric service, restroom, fire ring, and picnic tables • Can accommodate groups of up to 40 people
Both sites "A" and "B" have large areas for tent camping."
Group Camp B is $50 per night. That's the biggest disadvantage. There are no individual campsites listed, and I'm not sure if Ohio allows back-country camping outside of designated sites. Maybe someone else can offer some info here.

There are a couple of hiking trails available in the park.

My plan right now is to head down Thursday night, do the Air & Space Museum Friday, and the hamfest Saturday and Sunday morning, and head home by about 2pm on Sunday.

I camped here one year: www.cedarbrookcampground.com/

Kind of far away, but because of that it was fairly empty during the hamvention. I remember trees, but it was before I started hammocking so I have no idea on their rules and regs about it.
