    CRL small annoyance

OK I love using my CRL from whoopieslings.

However I do notice that once I tie it off to the figure 9 and stake out my tarp it loses some slack and I have to re-tighten my figure 9.

Again not a huge issue just a small annoyance.

I was watching the CRL tie out on Opie's youtube channel and I see he ties his figure 9 a little differently than I do with a few wraps around the top but I couldnt tell how he did it. Any better angle shots?

When I look at it all I see him do is wrap it twice in the toothed section of the f9 after he tensions it!

Start it at 1:12 and keep the vid paused (make sure it's in full screen mode) and then slowly drag it to advance the vid and you will see what he does! The toothed section is on his right and the tensioner is on his left (he flipped it when he grabbed it)!

At least that was how I looked at it!

Ha maybe you're right CB.... Looked like he did a knot before it or twisted the rope in a certain way but now that I look at it again he could have just hung on to the figure 9 to get a better grip.

Have anyone else had the same issues as me?

HI Raul, I've not experienced it going slack after the initial hang. You're on good solid trees that aren't moving, right? I wrap the tag end around the tree then over the "U" shaped notch in the Figure-9, pull the line nice and tight, then around the bottom of the Figure-9 and into the "V" shaped notch. I used the same warping technique that is engraved on the Figure-9. I've never found a need to tie a backup knot after putting the line in the "V" notch and pulling into the narrow part of the "V".

Editing to add: I just went out and hung mine just to measure how tight I pull it. Using a fish scale and on the tree side of the Figure-9 and with the line wrapped over the "U" shape channel, I'd say I averaged about a 10 pound pull. I'm pulling back towards the tree. After staking out the 4 corners of the tarp, the ridge line is no longer flat but it is taut as is the tarp. My ridge line is under the tarp BTW. I put more pressure on the line with my hand while watching the Figure-9 for slippage and I saw none. Did the same on the other end and watched for slippage at the Knotbone and saw none. Dunno. Might be worth tying a small piece of string onto the tag end with an overhand knot near the Figure-9 to use as a marker to see if there is slippage on that end or not. The line has virtually no stretch. On the Knotbone end if you hook the line in one of the slots on the end, wrap 3 times and clip it in on the other end on the same side as it entered, it will not slip.

Looking at Opie's video, he gives it a couple of extra wraps after locking the line in the "V" notch. I don't do that but it certainly doesn't hurt and can only help.

You got me curious but I don't know what else to add at this time. Thoughts?

I've taken to putting a slippery half hitch up against my Fig 9 after tying it off, just to make sure there's no slip. Never done a double wrap throught the teeth like Opie did. Might try that next time I'm out just to see.

I use 2.2 Zing-It for my CRL. I wrap it twice around the toothed section of the Fig 9 and finish with a slippery half-hitch. I haven't had any slippage yet.

Raul, its just a double wrap. No special twists or bends. Wrap it twice around the toothed section. This helps push the first wrap in and hold it.

I havent experienced any loosening using the figure 9 with the double wrap.
