    JP from So Cal

Hey guys-- my name is Joe and I've been hanging for about a week
I've been "ultra-lite" packing all my life-- did the PCT all through high school solo. I've always either used a USGI bivy or a North Face one-man, or a Mountain 24 when I was with with a friend and in the snow.
My family and I love to be outdoors, but for the last 10 years or so we've been camping in an RV. Still have the RV, but I'm being pulled back into packing by an unknown force. I got into hammocks after reading forums specializing in bush-craft. There seems to be a sect with some guys that doesn't like sleeping with critters.
Last week I bought a Hennessy Explorer Deluxe zip in. I used it last weekend in the National Forest behind my house, and fell in love with it. I think I sleep better in it then in our bed at home. I used that "trick" with the descending rings (I have a full climbing rack that hasn't been touched in 10 years, so I figured "what the heck'"). 40 seconds later I was set. Can't believe I wasted all these years-- searching for level spots, pitching tents, slinging poles, rain flies, and all that other stuff. I want my time back!

Anyways, I'll be poking my head in seeking advice. Thanks for this forum and your time!
    Joe

Welcome from Indiana. I lived in SanDiego for several years, climbed Whitney and tramped around the San Jasinto's while there. Sure miss California. Glad you are hanging around a bit.

Hello from another SoCal hiker and hanger! Sounds like you're at the opposite end of your career from me, and I think it's great that you found hammocks this early!

    Welcome.
When you think of the possibilities for a placement of a hammock it is incredible. Hiking in Oregon, the rain forest is so thick with ferns and under brush that it is sometimes impossible to find ground, let along level tent site ground. But when I was living out there I could always set up a hammock. Even on a 45 degree slope. Do that in your tent. Anyway, if you have trees the possibilities are endless. Enjoy
