My next DIY Project advice

My next adventure in making my own gear is going to be an under quilt. I want to make a 3/4 UQ and have the temp rating to around 30F. I went and bought 8 oz of 800+ down from Wilderness logics. Is that enough?

Also, how much rip stop should I use for this? Thanks a lot.

i'm making one now but it's an in betweener. it's for a buddy and he's only 5'10 so when finished the inner will be 75". dlbcorona just made me one and used 60x50x2 and i'm going to give it a go this weekend. he also used 8oz of 800 from the same place. weighs in right at 17 oz. he used the green 1.1 ripstop from BWDD, same place i got mine for this project. i would have pooped for 10oz if you want to ensure 30F. dblcorona used the same oz count as the main guy's but i always like to toss a little in for safety.
yardage,..i bought 5yds from scott for this project,...depending on how tall you are you could get 4yds. oh, for the baffle height if you choose, i'd stick with 1.5-2 for overall height. just my opinon but it will help keep loft and not allow your down to spread flat
the one i'm making now, i darted the inner 3 baffles on the inside, no darts on the outer and i did some diff cuts on the outer baffles and length

I'm 6' and was thinking that 4 yards would be enough. I want each side to be a different color though. I think I may e-mail WL and see if I can get an extra 2 oz thrown in with my order before they ship it out.

What did you use for the middle layer? I was thinking of just using some No see um mesh for it.

And thanks for the compliment on the tarp. There will be pics of what ever concoction of Fronkey quilt I come up with.

I'd say it all depends on what size you make it. I use the volume formula to estimate how much down I need.

L x W x H = cubic inches

If you have 800 fill power down, each ounce should fill approximately 800 cubic inches.

Example - a quilt 60" long x 50" wide x 2" thick = 6000 cu. in.

6000 / 800 = 7.5 ounces

I usually add another 10% just to be safe. So far this has worked out well for me.

As for the ripstop, there again, it depends on what size you are making.

Thanks Jerry, that's great. I'm thinking about making one around that size too.

What instructions is everyone using for a down underquilt anyways? Do you guys have one that you prefer over others?

Here is mine which uses 8 ounces of 800FP down. I'm very happy with it.
I am 6'-1" and 200#. Note that it is asymmetrical so that one diagonal is longer than the other. This works well in a hammock like a WBBB where you lay on one diagonal. If you want it more versatile, make it rectangular rather than a parallelogram.
