Will Seam Grip + Sil work on Membrane Silpoly? (RSBTR Winter12 Ultralight DIY Kit)

Ordered the RSBTR Winter12 Ultralight DIY Kit and am trying to figure out which sealer I am supposed to use. I am getting mixed responses.

The RSBTR Winter12 Ultralight DIY kit comes with "MEMBRANE Silpoly" but I am reading some reviews that the Seam Grip + Sil peels away when used on this material. Others are saying it works no problem.

Others are saying to use a mineral spirit with GE Silicone.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Will the Seam Grip + Sil work for seam sealing the "MEMBRANE Silpoly" Winter12 tarp?

It seems to be the simplest solution, which I would prefer. But don't want to use it if its going to peel away.

    Cheers!

From the RSBTR website: "Sil Net® is a 100% silicone sealant used for sealing the seams of silicone coated/impregnated fabrics such as Silnylon or Silpoly. Works as both a sealant and adhesive and is unaffected by extreme heat or cold.

Commonly used to seal seams on silicone coated gear including tarps, tents, packs, and bags. Can also be used to repair moderate rips and tears."

The GE silicone/mineral spirits works perfectly if you have some laying around. (I just used some the other day to seam seal a rain poncho I made from some RSBTR 1.1 silpoly) Otherwise, get a tube of Seam Seal + Sil.

    Hope this helps!

Yes... I used it seal a Membrane 10 asym tarp and have used it on all of the traps I have made to bond the reinforcements patches on rather than sew..
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

One thing to consider is that there are many different silpoly versions. Some have a different coating one side vs the other. If someone were to try to join the 'outside' of one of these to the 'inside', they would have problems because each side requires a different adhesive/sealer.

Membrane silpoly(per RSBTR website) is silicone based on both sides, therefore the SeamGrip + Sil would be the correct sealer no matter which side you are joining.

Indeed, I was going to mention that there are some tarps such as EE Paladin that are made with silpoly but with a polyurethane coating on one side.

    All true..

I made the assumption that the OP was using the kits offered by RBTR...

I made both of the 12' tarps as well as the asym.. all using RBTR fabric in the kits. There is a 'bonding' tutorial on RBTR website.
