Claytor DIY with Bugnet Added, finally done

Thanks for your feedback, guys. I think I will give the single layer a try with 1.9oz ripstop. I have to check my stash and see if there is enough left.

I have never seen a Claytor and don't know too much about them. What width would you recommend?

A few more questions on the end channels:

How wide do you make the channel? I'm guessing about 2"?

How wide is the folded-back piece with all the lines of stitching? Is 6" about right?

What width webbing would you recommend for reinforcement? Is 1" sufficient? Any preference for a certain material (nylon, polyester)?

Do you have to reinforce any area other than the very end of the opening?

How long does the opening in the bug net need to be? I plan on using omnitape instead of a zipper. I hate zippers.

And finally: I converted to a structural ridgeline this weekend and like it so far. Will a structural ridgeline interfere with the netting on this type of hammock? Would it go inside the netting, and if so, how?

You can tell I'm a newbie. Too many questions.

*Poly and I used 2", but 1 inch would be enough. Make sure you have a long enough piece installed to sew it within the stitching for the fold

*I only reinforced those and the ends of the zipper since I use a zipper slightly shorter than the hammock.

*7 or 8 feet is good. The Claytor zipper goes the full length of the hammock. By the way, when you get in and zip it, it actually pulls itself together with some force, so I don't know how well Velcro will work, though you can make it work I'm sure. I used a zipper from an old sleeping bag and took one of the closures off and put it on the other end so it would open both ways FROM the MIDDLE.

*The netting is attached to a point higher than the ends of the hammock for hanging the netting with shock cord, so the ridge line would have to go inside of it the netting. This will be a little difficult. You will need one for use with the bugnet, inside, and be able to remove it too, or at lease separate it in the center somewhere, or to make another one work when you turn the Claytor upside down to sleep on it when bugnet is not needed. That RL would be on the outside of the netting.

I know what you mean about the roll whip ends. It is so much easier, and I cannot tell any difference in the way it hangs since I sewed the channels. Good luch on your new hammock. Mule

Sure, you can do that. You don't need the channels. Just sew the three layers, or two, the bugnet and the bottom(s) and whip the ends. I prefer tying a double sheet bend with a short piece of Spectra myself, then put a loop on the other ends of the Spectra using a figure 8 or 9 and attach whatever suspension system you want. Mule

Nice bug net but one can just Velcro a bug net to both sides of the hammock and add a ridge line to keep it off your face. I sewed one side of mine and put Velcro on the other side and on the sewed side there is also some tie offs so if I'm not using the net just role it up and tie it up. My home made rig can be seen under my profile. i believe this will help ya..

I dunno if you were still working on this idea, but if you were working on trying to keep the structural ridgeline, you can put a small length of cord with stopper knots tied and attach a biner or rap ring to one side. Then you can roll one of these into your whipping on each side. This will give you a place to attach your structural ridgeline in the hammock. You can see an example here in headchange4u's hennessy clone (scroll down to the last picture).
