thanks everyone, i got it figured out last night. i made 2 sets of slings, the first was total crap. the second set turned out great.

Here's another method to do a McDonald Brummel that is easier for me than the method shown by Opie - I don't have to undo that first pull through.

Scroll abou halfway down to the right sidebar and the "Helpful Howto Videos" and click on the "Modified Brummel Splice part 1".
