Suspension: Can't somebody else do it?

I'm channeling my inner Homer here.

I love my HH but I hate the straps/HH knot. I feel like I am very limited in my site selection because the stock straps are all too often too short for the larger trees. I need an alternative. However:

First off, I cannot sew, nor do I know anyone who can sew well enough for me to trust my 220 lbs with them.

Secondly, I am not very handy, so I read all these great threads about suspension options with rings and cinches and knots, full of pictures and diagrams, and I get halfway through the instructions when my head starts to throb and I give up because I just can't visualize it.

So, what are my options for fast, efficient safe (for me and the trees) suspension? Do any vendors have a means for me to switch suspensions without requiring alterations on my end? If sewing is a requisite, is there someplace I can ship my hammock to be altered?

The absolute easiest route that would require you to make no mods to your HH would to be to order longer tree huggers from Strapworks.

I don't like tieing/untieing all the time either, especially if the knots are wet or frozen.

No sewing required! If you can cut a ziptie and untie/retie two knots, you're all set.

You can use whatever materials you choose. The links provided below are only an example. They do not represent either the lightest or cheapest components available.


12 easy steps -

Step 1: Order some webbing (the StrapWorks Simple Sling in Seatbelt Webbing is a strong choice) Get two, both with loops in each end.

Step 2: Order some cinch buckles (OnRope1 Buckles)

Step 3: Order some cord (Spyderline 3.8mm works great)

Step 4: Gather all your materials and your hammock (including 2 zip ties).

Step 5: Cut the ziptie that holds the cover on your hammock ends (no harm done, it's just a plastic ziptie)

Step 6: Slide the cover back and observe the knot.



Step 7: Untie that knot.

Step 8: Tie a prussik knot to one of your cinch buckles using a length of the Spyderline.





Step 9: Tie the loose ends of the Spyderline (as if they were a single strand) you attached to your buckle to the HH end in the same method that it was originally tied (refer to the knot on the other end of your hammock if necessary).

Step 10: Replace the end cover and pull tight with a fresh zip tie.

Step 11: Repeat instructions for the other end of the hammock.

Step 12: Enjoy your new HH suspension.

As far as I know, yes. The zip ties just hold on the little covers over the knots at the ends of the hammock.

That depends on how much you need for where you want to hang (tree diameters, etc). Usually 10 to 15 feet, but some use less. 12 is a good compromise.

I can't determine what the length of each unit on the APS site is, either.

P.S. I have chosen not to take this to PM, only because I'm holding out hope that their are others out their as clueless as I am who may benefit from the hand holding.

It's nice to have some extra, but I would get no less than 4 feet for each end. That will give you room for your knots, and you can cut off any excess.

The APS 'unit' is one foot.

Wouldn't simplest option be to just tie the stock HH rope to the buckle?
