Hello, I'm a ground camper and i'm not making the leap to hanging just yet, but for rigging tarps- I'm intrigued by the low-stretch cordage talked about here. The paracord Ive been using is okay but stretchy.
I want to know if I can use lash-it 1.75mm and amsteel blue 7/64 for these knots:
truckers hitch for ridgeline
bowline
taut line hitch
alpine loop
sheet bend
double fishermans
it's a little slippery, this just makes it work better for slipped knots and hitches. most normal knots i use seem to work great.
truckers hitch: yes, i usually just tie off with 2 slipped half hitches for a ridgeline
bowline: yes, if it slips there's always the double bowline, but single is probably fine for most stuff
tautline: not sure
alpine loop not sure (is this same as alpine butterfly? if so then i'd guess yes)
sheet bend: yes, if using for a suspension knot, double sheetbend might be needed, single is fine for joining 2 tarp lines to make one long one.
double fisherman's: yes, but if used for suspension knot, use triple fisherman
slipped buntline: works well too
Take a look in the offerings from Whoopieslings.com on their tarp continuous ridgeline (or 2 line version), you will gain a great appreciation of spliced fixed eye loops and continuous loops fashioned as prussics for adjustment. Never need to deal with a knot again. They also use the same basic setup for tarp guy out lines (with or with out self tensioners for silnylon tarps). The issue with knots in lines a small as zing-it and lash-it (1.75 line) is that if they are loaded with enough force, you won't be getting that knot undone without a lot of frustration. 7/64th amsteel with it's 1600 pound rating would be overkill for tarp lines. That stuff is mainly used for hammock suspensions. 1.75mm Lash-It or Zing-It are rated at 400 pounds and more suitable for tarp use, but definitely not hammock suspension.

I've had bowlines untie unless a long tail is used. Tautlines do not function overly well for me. I think the line is too stiff to coil well that small and too slippery to hold in a loose coil. Sheet Bend absolutely must be tied in the right configuration. It will untie in flash if the tails are not proper. Can they be used? Yeah. But I have found that additional care and precision is required to make sure they will hold. YMMV

As Brian said, amsteel is overkill for a tarp. There are smaller and lighter weight options available that hold knots a little better. IMO its better to have weaker line on tarps because I'd rather have a line fail before the tarp rips.

Interesting things to ponder there. Ive read lots of people here use the stuff for guylines and other things but i guess thats because you already have it for the hammock.
Something cheap like paracord but without stretching is what I need then?

no, the dyneema is what you want, they were saying 7/64" amsteel is overkill for a tarp, probably not noticing you mentioned zing-it as well. something like zing-it (1.75-2mm single braid dyneema) is great for tarps, it's just the right diameter, doesn't stretch, it's often stiff which keeps it from tangling, and it's plenty strong, i've found nothing better for tarp lines and don't have problems with the knots i use. the 7/64 amsteel (much larger diameter than zing-it) is for hammock suspension components.
