    Texas hangers

I am totally new to hammocks.

I bought some used HH Expedition asyms and a WB BB 1.1 DL.

It gets hot in Texas. What do you all use for insulation/underpad in Texas? Do you even need anything?

    Thanks,
    Lester

    Welcome Lester!

You may be new to hammocks but from your join date, you've been on here over 2 years. Hopefully you've seen info on our Texas Group Hangs and can join us on one in the future.

Sure it gets hot in Texas but any night where the temps drop below 70 could warrant insulation and what Texas hangers use cover the whole range from pads to Peapods, down UQ and IX as well as other synthetics.

There are a lot of Texas hangers on here, what part of the state are you in? I bet there's someone near you that could show you some tips.

Plan on needing some sort of bottom insulation until summer gets here for sure.

With temps in the low 70's, I'm okay with no under insulation for a while, but I couldn't go a whole night without needing something under me. I think once summer gets here with overnight lows in the high 70's or low 80's, I could get by with no under insulation.

Pad or quilt is up to you, your comfort level, and your wallet.

    New to Hammocks

I bought a used HH Expedition Asym 2 years ago. I never used it until recently. I am learning how to hang it.

I am trying to figure out what I need for the summer months. My son just crossed over to Boy Scouts. I will be camping with him once or twice a month. We have a canoe campout next month. I think I'll try the hang method. I used a bivy and tarp last camp out.

As Shane says, on summer nights mid 70s and up you'll not need anything under you and you'll be so much more comfortable than on the ground.

Here's one more plug for a group hang where you can see lots of set ups and find a bunch of folks willing to help you out. Just shoot up to Oklahoma this weekend.

I was hanging in the Sam Houston National Forest this past weekend. It was very windy and the temps went down to about 68. It might have been a little cool for some folks, but I slept like a baby, with just a thick bed sheet doubled underneath me.

    I live in east texas.

Sometimes when it's in the low 80's and 70's I'll just sleep in the hammock with just my clothes. When it gets to low 70's mid 60's all I need is a warm jacket and I'm still good. under that tempature I'll use a walmart CCF pad cut to torso length.

In the Hill Country I usually need a pad at night in the summer and I don't chance it. I am not hiking so I usually use a thermarest. That and a blue walmart pad will do for the winter.
